Nvidia planning to buy Hugging Face for $13 billion sounds like a clean, logical marriage on paper: the company that sells the picks and shovels takes over one of the biggest places where people share the blueprints. But the part that should make you sit up is the same part that makes it attractive: one company getting to shape both the engine and the marketplace of models.

If the main library, the main discovery feed, and the main tooling all start nudging you toward one compute path, you might not notice at first. It will look like convenience. Then your costs lock in. Then your options shrink. Switching later becomes painful. The “open” part still exists in theory, but in practice you’re on rails.

Or imagine you’re a researcher who publishes a model that runs great on non-Nvidia setups or is optimized for a different approach. You can still post it, sure. But if distribution and defaults drift toward what benefits the owner, your work can become harder to find, harder to run, and easier to ignore. Not through censorship. Through subtle friction.

And once the supply chain is efficient, it becomes tempting to start extracting more value from it. Not necessarily with price hikes—sometimes it’s with control. Priority access. Better placement. Faster serving. Special features. If the best experience sits behind “Nvidia inside” assumptions, the ecosystem starts to tilt.

There’s also the trust angle. Hugging Face’s brand is tied to the idea that the community has a real seat at the table. If it’s owned by a hardware giant, every moderation decision, every policy update, every “we’re doing this for safety” moment will be viewed through a different lens. Even if the intent is good, the perception changes. And in open communities, perception is not cosmetic. It affects where people build.

I’m not saying Nvidia shouldn’t do it. I’m saying people should stop treating this as automatically good for openness just because the word “open” is in the story. Big acquisitions don’t usually preserve a culture by accident. They preserve it when it’s a non-negotiable product requirement—and even then, the gravity of the parent company wins more often than not.

So if you care about open models, the real question isn’t “will Nvidia invest?” Of course they will, if it helps demand for compute. The real question is: will the center of the open model world still be allowed to belong to everyone when it’s owned by someone with a huge financial reason to steer it?
